Day 12 – Madrid, Spain – The Spanish Fly-in
Even on no sleep I was still able to appreciate one of my very favorite countries… SPAIN!
I was excited to be in a country that unlike my place of birth, after being hit by a hideous terror attack (the June 4, 2004 train bombings in Madrid), choose not to bomb the fuck out of other human beings - many of whom were guilty of harming no one. On top of that, after the a fore mentioned terror attack, Spain choose to kick out the conservative president for a progressive leftist president, who immediately enacted many progressive policies including a pullout of Spain’s troops from Iraq, an increase in aid to foreign nations, pro gay/lesbian legislation, the list goes on… A very different approach to fighting the so-called “war on terror”, that’s for sure!
I do have to mention that during my visit to Spain I learned that while most people feel the new president is better than the old conservative guard, they still see him as a sketchy politician.
Anyway, Madrid was hot! Something like 100 degrees! That was fine by me! I LOVE THE HEAT! This being our first trip to Madrid, we played in a small 300-person club. The people running the show were great!!! Very hospitable, generous, and good-humored.
We went on at 11pm. The kids were amped, we were amped, and it was HOT AS HELL! I had grown accustomed to playing for 6 to 10 thousand people, with the closest person being a good 20 feet away behind a fence and security! Tonight was real and in your face! The kids were at my feet pushing into the monitors! The sound was terrible! It was a great time!
We were all ready to go except for Chris Head who was having technical problems, so I started playing Ole. Everyone in the room sang and clapped along and I knew our set was going to be a blast!
About 7-8 songs in Pat nearly passed out from the heat!It was boiling in there! I think the combination of next to no sleep and extreme heat simply kicked Pat’s ass! We had to send him to a cooler location in the club to cool down. While he was gone we played “Post War Breakout” without drums! Pat came back in time for the second chorus and when he joined in it ROCKED!!!
Unfortunately, Pat only lasted for a few more songs! We played, “Die For The Government”, sent Pat away, and in our sweat drenched clothes we hung out with the sweat-drenched kids. It was a disaster, but at the same time it was a blast!
The kids were fucking GREAT! They were really understanding and cool and in the end everyone benefited from it. I CAN’T WAIT to go back to Madrid!!!
