Day 5
The day started off with one of the moto cross guys
getting arrested by the cops for riding his dirt bike
around with no permit. Sucked to be him. Actually,
it sucked to be anyone with illegal drugs because
there were about 50 under-cover cops working the show, busting kids at random. Basically, the cops in
southern Germany (which is traditionally more
conservative then the rest of Germany) suck! So
what’s new?
That said, we didn’t let the cops ruin our fun! The
show was situated in the middle of a scenic forest- a
setting hard to beat! In between awesome sets by
Strike Anywhere, The Beat Steaks, and The Slackers, I enjoyed peaceful walks through the forest with various friends. It was a little surreal to go from walking on a wooded path to cranking up my guitar amp and screaming “Fuck GW and the war in Iraq!” at the top of my lungs. (but a lot of fun!) As always, the kids were wickedly cool!
Each night after the show The Slackers have been
setting up a little bar complete with x-mas lights,
furniture (bought at the flea market in Munich),
garden gnomes, and of course liquor. I’m not a
drinker, but it’s a cool place to end each night-
everyone hanging at what has become known as, “The Speak Easy”. The Slackers are amazing people! Really mellow and cool. It’s been a pleasure being around them.
Our set was fun! The kids were great!
Day 6 - Cologne
May 31, 2004
Today was rough. I slept till 3 or 4pm. When I woke
up I was given the bad news that at the last second
for unexplained reasons the venue for the show had
been changed to a much smaller venue. Actually, it
wasn’t much bigger then the venue Anti-Flag played by ourselves in Cologne only a few months earlier. (That venue was around 1500.) So what was to be a big show was now scaled way back and a lot of kids who didn’t buy tickets ahead couldn’t get in. That sucked!
I met a really cool American womyn who moved to
Germany years ago simply because she loved it. It’s
cool to meet American’s who do not live in America
because their take on America and America’s foreign
policy is usually very different then the average
American. She told me a lot of positive things about
Al Gore which didn’t get into the mainstream American press but did get into the European press which she thinks would have influenced people like me who didn’t vote for him in 2000 to have voted for him. She suggested that I read the intro to his book (I don’t remember the title, but it’s the one he wrote about the environment.) She said it would basically explain why he sounded so much like Bush and ran the LAME and PATHETIC campaign he ran in 2000. According to her he would have been more progressive once he got elected. It would take a lot for me to be convinced that Gore wasn’t a tool for multinational corporations but I promised to read the intro to his book so now I have to. I’m just passing this along to you because it was news to me and I thought it might be news to you too.
Anyway, our set which we started with Turncoat was alot of fun! Thanks Koln!
ps Our bus driver is playing really bad radio again
and strangely enough I am enjoying it again! The
other night I caught myself singing along to “You Were Always On My Mind” by The Pet Shop Boys. Weird.
